Research
PCC collaborates with academic institutions to conduct community-based participatory research. This provides an opportunity for Hispanic community members to play an active role in assessing and improving the status of our community’s health and well-being.
Our collaborative research project to date include:
Community Readiness Assessment: Hispanic Health in Nashville:
Participatory research project with Tennessee State University (TSU) Center for Health Research and PCC, funded by the Sociological Initiatives Foundation. (March 2006 – March 2007). Through this collaboration:

TSU trained 6 PCC members to conduct interviews of 50 Hispanic community members

Presented findings to Hispanic community members of Community Readiness Assessment: Hispanic Health in Nashville at PCC (download.pdf)

Familias Saludables / Healthy Families Pilot Project:
Participatory research project with TSU, Vanderbilt University, Meharry Medical College, and PCC, with funding from the National Institutes of Health (October 2007 – April 2009). Through this collaboration:

Tailored the We Can! childhood obesity prevention program to be culturally-appropriate for Hispanic families (for parents with children ages 5-10)

Program implemented by promotor/a(s) de salud (lay health promoters) in pilot study
GEMAS Pilot Project:
Participatory research project with Vanderbilt, Meharry Meducal College, TSU and PCC (July 2008 – June2009), with funding from the Tennessee Department of Health. Through this collaboration:
✴ Tailored a parent-daughter education program for girls ages 8-10 to be culturally-appropriate for the Hispanic community
✴ Program implemented by promotor/a(s) de salud (lay health promoters) in pilot study
Cervical Cancer Vaccine Pilot Study:
Participatory research project with TSU and PCC (2008) to examine attitudes in the Hispanic community about the HPV vaccine to prevent cervical cancer. Through this collaboration:

Developed a new study funded by the Meharry-Vanderbilty-TSU Cancer Partnership starting in August 2009 (under a grant of the National Institutes of Health), which will implement and evaluate a social marketing campaign to increase use of the HPV vaccine among Hispanic girls

PCC members co-authored a publication of the study findings in the Journal of Health Care for the Poor and Underserved (download pdf)
